Japan is made up of a chain of 4,223 volcanic islands. The four largest islands are called Hokkaido, Honshee, Shikoku and Kyushu, and there are about 4,000 smaller islands. Japan has many mountains and volcanoes (and some erupt). Mountains cover more than three quarters of Japan, with steep valleys made by fast rivers. There are many beautiful lakes along the valleys.
