On 11th March 2011, a powerful earthquake in the North Pacific Ocean near Japan caused a tsunami that flooded huge parts of Japan's east coast. Over 14,000 people were killed, another 5000 were injured, and thousands more are still missing. Over 125,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, roads and bridges were damaged and power stations had to be shut down. One nuclear power station was damaged so badly by the earthquake and water that there were explosions and it started to leak radioactive (poisonous) chemicals.
